Fail: Drowned Azalea!

by Dian on March 12, 2010PinItGoogle+

My middle son bought me a beautiful Azalea plant for Valentine’s Day!  It is pink, my favorite color.  I love it!

On Monday, I watered it, or drowned it apparently!  But, I didn’t notice until Tuesday when I saw it all droopy!  I thought it would recover so I left it alone. On Wednesday I was really worried about it, it was still quite droopy and not seeming to get any better at all!  But, the sun was shining beautifully, so I thought I would just set it out side and let the sun dry it out a bit.  The soil was till really wet.

So, I happily went to work doing the shopping lists for the site on Wednesday, it became more dreary out and then a storm came out of no where and hit hard and fast, and with tons of hail!  I watched the hail and the rain, thinking wow that’s a bad storm!  The storm went away almost as fast as it came.  I kept working.

In the afternoon it dawned on me that my poor Azalea was out IN the storm and HAIL!  Oh No!  I ran and got itAzalea - Fail, I don’t know why I was hurrying… the rain and hail had stopped hours before.  Well, here’s what it looks like today – so I guess this poor drowned Azalea is my Friday Fail!

Dian it will grow. Trust me my have been throw hail and back. It will bounce back they are hardy plants. I would transfer it to a large pot or in the ground. YOU didn’t fail. Let your son know it is sick and you all will take care of it with a new pot or home. Trust me it will come back.

Some thing I learned years ago from my great grandmother was to put ice cubes in plants to water them. It helps not to overflow the plant, it’s easier then trying to water a plant that’s above your head (she had a lot of hanging plants) plus it saves time. I’m not good with plants but hers were always perfect. She had it down to a science as to how many each plant needed.

Erika,
Wow! I thought they had to be watered with room temperature water! You learn something new every day!
Thanks!

What a sad azalea! But as another commenter said, it will probably recover. Just bring it in when the next storm hits. My gramma couldn’t kill a plant, ever. She could make anything grow and BLOOM. I kill houseplants without even trying. My husband has banned me from keeping house plants any more. I do okay with the outdoor ones. :)

Dawn,
I’m usually pretty good with plants indoor or out, I’m not sure how I over watered it!
Thanks!

Aw poor thing, but it looks like it will recover if you let it drain. :)

SAD. :( I have had so many plants die and it still hurts me every time! But even if this one doesn’t make it, the fact that your son was thoughtful enough to give this to you lives on!
