These items are discontinued or seasonal products that you can purchase at Dollar General for just a penny. However, they’re not regularly discounted items so you won’t see shelves bearing signs like “Get Your Penny Items Here!”.

Since these products are out of season or are from a previous season or year’s merchandise, Dollar Tree’s system marks these down to just a cent. The employees are supposed to take them off the store shelves and throw them away but sometimes some pieces are left on the sales floor for eagle-eyed shoppers to find.

Where Are They

Since these items are not regular sale items, you need to do a little bit of hunting to find great them. You need to scour the shelves to find those coveted penny items.

Plus, there are specific codes and symbols you should be able to spot. Normally, each product in the store has a bar code with a combination of these codes that allow you to “date” the item and find out if it is out of season or discontinued:

  • 19 – 2019

Usually, Dollar General personnel pull these items from the shelves at the end of the business day on Monday. Any products left behind will ring at the register for one cent by Tuesday.

  • If you find an item that you think is just one cent, put it in your cart. While these items shouldn’t still be on the sales floor, Dollar General will still sell it to you for a penny when you checkout. The caveat is you can’t go back to get more of the same item if it does indeed ring for a penny.
  • Be polite when you get to the cashier. Don’t argue and demand that an item should cost a penny. If you thought something would cost a penny but it rings for the regular price, you can always return it.
  • Not all stores penny out the same items at the same time. You may need to check back for the items that you want.
  • Be neat when you’re looking for items. Don’t leave shelves in disarray while on your search for your next bargain find.

Many stores have a similar process, they obviously don’t advertise it, but if you know when and how you can definitely get some awesome deals!  Dollar General Penny Shopping isn’t hard, but it is competitive, so keep quiet and shop early to find the best items before your competition gets there.  🙂
